My Editorial Work

Callum Smith is an editorial photographer who uses his photography as a medium to document and examine British heritage and the surrounding culture that he grew up in - his work is predominantly interested in masculinity with respect to this topic.

Smith pays close attention to the study of human behaviour and the perspectives of his subjects - educating himself and his audience to better understand their experiences and viewpoints.

Smith’s work invites people to reflect on themselves, their own thoughts and beliefs. This is often done through the use of humour and satirization in his photographs - used to take the solemnity away and creating a space for the audience to open up and ask questions of their own understanding of the subject matter.

Smith’s most recent work ‘What is Lost’ addresses toxic masculinity in British culture, exploring themes of phototherapy while documenting the social issue - capturing men in British culture who haven’t felt like they have been able to show affection towards each other and providing a safe environment for them to do so - recording the process in an ethnographic manner.

Working in the Industry

Phoenix Magazine

I worked as the ‘Picture Desk Intern’ at the fashion/music pop-culture magazine, Phoenix. My duties involved sourcing location, equipment, artists/talent for the photoshoots. I also acted as the middleman between PR companies and Phoenix - as well as sourcing, editing and organising any images used in the magazine. I also was given the opportunity to assist with the photographer on photoshoot days.

Oxford City Stars Hockey Team

I worked as the Marketing Manager for The Oxford City Stars. In effort to create a larger reach for new fanbase for the club, as well as creating content that the current fans will enjoy - I do this by using features such as Facebook Advertisement and social media posts while cross-referencing this with data given by TicketCo and Google Analytics. I was also in charge of all photography for the team alongside editing and using them to create graphics for the advertisement and social media posts.

Tempest Photography

I currently work at the UK’s biggest school photography company, Tempest. I work primarily as an Early years, Primary and Secondary School Photographer. In terms of photography I also occasionally will opt to be sent away for a week or so at a time to work as a ‘Graduation Photographer’. These Photographer roles involve understanding the brief of what the clinetial want on the day of the shoot. Arriving promptly to set up; perform; have a clear understanding of cameras and you equipment so you can alleviate any mishaps; knowing the right equipment to use for the job in hand; give direction to subjects; keep open communication and be diplomatic with the cliential (e.g. the School or University); then ultimately provide a product that the customer is happy with.

On top of this I also work as a ‘Canvasser’ for Tempest. This is a salesman like role - in which I will arrive at ‘non-customer’ establishments and attempt to sway them over to using Tempest Photography by using my diplomacy skills and hopefully a bit of charm.
